Mission Statement
We, the staff of St. Bernard School, provide a diverse student population with the optimum spiritual, intellectual, social and emotional growth in a caring environment that encourages strong values, and personal integrity. Students are encouraged to assess their responsibility for the society to which they belong and to improve it by working toward peace, love, truth, justice, and freedom for all. St. Bernard School offers its diverse student population a strong foundation in basic skills in a caring environment that encourages honesty, respect, a sense of responsibility and service to others. Above all, we believe that it is important to reflect the attitude of Christ, and to encourage his way of life.
History of St. Bernard School
In the 1880s, Rockville, Connecticut was a small textile town. St. Bernard Church was a small Catholic parish in the town’s center. Members of this parish had a strong desire to provide a parochial school education for their children. They dedicated themselves to acquiring land and building a school.
While the new school was being built, classes were held at the St. Bernard Church basement, starting on November 3, 1886. On September 10, 1895, the new school building was opened.
The Sisters of Mercy were the first teachers at St. Bernard School. They designed a rigorous educational program that served as the blueprint for St. Bernard School’s quest for academic excellence.
The academic goal of education at St. Bernard School has been and will continue to be the formation of a discerning mind. We equip our students with skills, subject knowledge, and a life-long zeal for learning.
Our curriculum is well planned and balanced in accordance with the Diocese of Norwich. We stress the basics in the area of academics. Within our school community, we adapt our teaching to the needs of the students.
